Three GOOD Reasons For Giving Up GOOD Things

Life-Changing? GOOD!

So often we hear someone speak of something life-changing. We tend to send it to the cliche bone pile, right? How many people really experience something that literally changes their life?

Well this year one of my mentors shared an affirmation with me that literally changed my life.

This time, the Earth paused in its rotation for me. Silence fell across all that I know. A single ray of sun might as well have emitted from a dark starry sky, shining down on me to say, “Rebecca, this is YOUR moment. Choose now which way you will go”.

“It is now safe to give up my good for my greater good.”

Wow! Really? I can relinquish something that isn’t necessarily BAD

At the first moment of hearing this, I was stunned. I was liberated. I was warmed by the thought of being SAFE to make a choice; even a scary one. There had been a big point of indecision in my life for a few years. Never had I conceived of the idea of being safe in the decision I would choose. There is such comfort in this thought!

“It is now safe to give up my good for my greater good.”

Can it be? Only one way to find out! I made my choice.  Not an easy one in the least. One that shifted the direction of my life from what had been for many, MANY years. But here is what I’ve learned so far:

What I see as good is limited by my VIEWPOINT.

This seems SO obvious, but we really don’t know what is possible until we step out of the comfort of what we know. My move from what I saw as good is proving that my good was good indeed, but limited by my view of my world as I have witnessed it.

From my window I can see across to the next hillside; but I can’t see the whole town down below, my county, my state, my country or my planet. If I only sit in this chair and never see more then the adjacent hillside, it is forever all I know.

It is no different with our viewpoint over our circumstances.

How much GOOD becomes limited by our sense of COMFORT?

I don’t know about you, but I have often had a burning desire to do a thing, only to realize that the burn remained smaller than my perceived need for comfort. For instance, an opportunity to do something special avails itself. Immediately excitement ensues, but then logic takes over and ties my hands behind my back with the restraints of “what-ifs”.

Friends, comfort can be entirely overrated, especially when motivating us not to choose bold decisions! Comfort is being willing to keep your good rather than risk finding your greater good. Comfort is settling for what is known in the face of choosing to step into the unknown to see what’s there.

What’s stopping you? Don’t let logic restrain you with the what-ifs! BLAZE that trail!

Is your burning desire to learn to sing? Do you long to write an award-winning novel? Are you yearning to chuck everything but what fits in your backpack and take off across continents on foot? Learn to ride a motorcycle?

What have you to lose but what you already know? Imagine what might be out there! What is one thing that has been niggling in your thoughts that you want to see, do or be? What’s holding you back from it? I invite you to share in the comments below.
